Many prisoners were killed by hanging on the rafters in front of the ovens. This was actually the second crematorium built at Dachau. The first was unable to keep up with all the bodies. By 1944, even this larger crematorium couldn't keep up with the waves of dead. At the time of liberation, piles of bodies surrounded the building.
Two of these chutes on the outside of the building were used to introduce the gas pellets into the chamber.
