As the camp became more crowded, separate bunk beds gave way to large combined beds, but still with a defined space for each prisoner.
At its most crowded, the bunks were just large shelves packed with people. The camp was built to hold 5,000 prisoners. When it was liberated, the Americans found over 30,000 in the camp.
