The camp did have a line of trees along the central road, but the originals were felled in 1948. These trees were planted in the 1980s.
The north end of the camp is now home to three religious memorials. In the central position is the Catholic Chapel of the Mortal Agony of Christ, topped by a crown of thorns rather than a cross. Unlike many other Nazi camps, Dachau was not primarily one for Jews. At the time of liberation, the majority of remaining prisoners were Polish Catholic.
